A Business Owner's Policy (BOP) bundles general liability with commercial property coverage in one policy. It protects your business against claims from customers and covers your own equipment, furniture and inventory — for a food business with something on the premises worth protecting, it is often the natural choice.
What a BOP covers
A BOP has two parts.
General liability covers claims that your business caused bodily injury or property damage to someone else, and the legal defense that comes with them:
- A customer slips on a wet floor near the restrooms.
- A guest's belongings are damaged by a dropped tray.
Commercial property covers the things your business owns:
- Kitchen equipment — ovens, fryers, mixers, the espresso machine.
- Furniture and fixtures — tables, chairs, the counter, the display case.
- Inventory — food, drink and supplies on the shelves and in storage.
When a covered event damages that property, the property part of the policy helps you repair or replace it, up to the limits you choose.
What it does not cover
A BOP is broad, but not everything:
- Your own employees getting hurt at work are covered by workers' compensation.
- Claims tied to serving alcohol need liquor liability, which can be added for businesses that sell, serve or furnish alcohol.
- Vehicles your business uses — including the vehicle of a food truck — are a matter for auto insurance.
Before checkout, you see what a policy will not cover and which operations the carrier will not insure, and you confirm you have read it.
When a BOP makes sense
Consider a BOP rather than general liability alone when:
- You own equipment, furniture or inventory that would be expensive to replace.
- You run a fixed location — a restaurant, café, bakery or bar — where a single event could damage everything at once.
- You want one policy instead of arranging liability and property separately.
If you have little property of your own, general liability on its own may be enough.
Availability
Whether a BOP is available depends on your state and your business type; general liability is more widely available. Not every carrier insures every business type — food trucks, for example, are quoted by fewer carriers than restaurants. When you quote with us, you see the options offered for your business.
What the price depends on
No price can be promised in advance, because it depends on the details:
- The property limits you choose for your equipment, furniture and inventory.
- The building — its construction, its age, and protection like sprinklers and alarms.
- The kind of business, your revenue and your location.
- Your operations — serving alcohol or catering off-site change the picture.
- Your history — past claims and how long you have been in business.
